5G and EMF Exposure
What started as a way to communicate wirelessly with portable phones has turned into a futuristic vision of fully connected “smart” homes and cities, run by a worldwide wireless network. Since consumers want to be able to control their homes and their lives via their smartphone, a new wireless technology is being deployed around the world. 5G takes a big leap from 4G in technology and capability, but in the race to usher in virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR), little is known about the implications of 5G on health and well-being.
In this article, we will examine this new technology and the changes 5G will bring to our world. We’ll also look at the health risks of 5G wireless networks, how they differ from 4G, and what you can do to protect yourself and your family.
What is 5G Technology?
The 5th generation mobile network (5G) is the new global wireless standard. It will help connect mobile devices as well as other machines and objects. This new technology will increase the availability, capacity, speed and reliability of wireless communication to support a way of life that is called the “Internet of Things” (IoT).
IoT is a system of internet-connected devices that collect and transfer data wirelessly and automatically, without human interaction. Your smartphone, fitness tracker, smart appliances and Wi-Fi enabled home entertainment system are examples of your devices that will be part of the IoT.
How Does 5G Work?
5G technology uses higher-frequency waves than 4G, between 30 GHz and 300 GHz. This is known as “millimeter wavelengths,” since the length of the wave is one to ten millimeters, instead of the centimeter waves of 4G. This means that 5G can send more data at higher speeds—it is up to 100 times faster than 4G.
The problem is that these waves can’t travel the distance that lower-frequency waves can. Because of this, 5G networks require many more antennas at much closer distances to the devices that connect to them. It is projected that 5G cell towers will need to be installed approximately 750 feet from each other (rather than miles apart, as is the case with 4G technology).
What Can 5G Do?
There are many future technologies that will be able to use 5G. This will include automatic vehicle sensors and self-driving cars, holograph-assisted hospital procedures and enhanced video conferencing. Consumers will be able to download movies in seconds, and there will be a new generation of smart home devices, with all devices communicating with each other. Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be integrated into the new 5G networks, making the technology more efficient while reducing costs for companies providing the service.
Why Companies Are Pushing 5G (and Scientists Are Pushing Back)
Wireless companies are very keen for quick adoption of 5G technology. In a field that has been overly saturated by prior technologies like 4G, they see a potentially huge new financial opportunity, with consumers having to replace older devices with brand new ones enabled for 5G. However, since wireless devices have only been in widespread use for about a decade, the number of research studies of potential health effects from their long-term use is limited - and this is especially so for 5G technology.
In 2017, International EMF Scientist Appeal’s advisors submitted a letter regarding the FCC’s (Federal Communication Commission) proposed rules that allowed 5G antennas to be rapidly deployed in the U.S. They called on the government agency to consider the impact that the 5G network would have on the public in terms of health and safety.
Unfortunately the FCC has so far ignored all the calls from scientists and doctors urging more research on the potential health risks of 5G. Currently, it’s “full steam ahead” with the new, untested 5G network, regardless of the many studies that have demonstrated negative implications on human health.
The Evolution of Wireless Technology
From 1979 to 2021, wireless cellular technology has progressed at lightning speed. What started with a bulky phone that allowed 30 minutes of talk time has quickly grown into the imminent global adoption of 5G, which supports a multitude of technologies and devices as part of the “Internet of Things” (IoT), for smart homes and smart cities.
- 1G (Japan, 1979; U.S., 1983) – The first phone, the Motorola DynaTac, had poor sound quality and no encryption.
- 2G – (Finland, 1991) – 2G provided better sound quality, slightly faster speeds and encryption. Basic smartphone features were available, such as ringtones and text messages.
- 3G – (Japan, 2001) – 3G provided video conferences, faster speeds, improved streaming, live video chat, emails and web surfing.
- 4G – (Norway, 2009) – 4G provided the current standard smartphone services, with faster speeds than 3G.
- 5G – (South Korea, 2019) – 5G claims to be 20 times faster than 4G. It solves bandwidth and latency problems and increases the frequency range needed for mass IoT implementation.
Thirty percent of countries in the world had 5G access in February 2021. It is projected that there will be 3.6 billion 5G-connected devices by 2025, expanding to 4.4 billion by the year 2027. See how widespread 5G coverage already is around the world.
Is There a Health Risk with 5G?
More than 240 scientists have tried to warn the United Nations about the potential dangers with the fast rollout of 5G, citing the health risks of RF exposure. There have also been complaints about biased health studies conducted by the telecommunication companies themselves.
Studies cited have found strong evidence of physical damage from cell phone radiation, such as heart damage, DNA damage and cancer. Swedish researchers discovered that children who use cell phones regularly before they reach 20 years of age had four times the risk of a brain tumor.
EMF Health Risks
Is 5G harmful to humans? Research has shown the negative health effects of EMF, including the link between RF radiation exposure and cancer. One concern is that 5G technology uses a broader range of frequency bands with much higher frequencies than those previously evaluated. The 5G network also has increased capacity and requires many more towers in closer proximity to residential areas. Scientists believe that the technology has moved ahead without adequate study of 5G’s effects on human health.
Health Risks of 5G Mobile vs 4G Technology
Current 4G technology has already been found to have serious health risks. So, what are the 5G implications? Unlike 4G, 5G sends “focused beams of intense microwave radiation” from thousands of satellites to a multitude of devices around the earth. These devices, in our homes, offices, and vehicles, then send these beams back into space. The radiation from these 5G antennas is far greater than that from 4G technology. WiFi hubs in homes and offices will be allowed to use microwave beams that are 15 times stronger than 5G phones and 150 times that of 4G.
Electromagnetic radiation activist Arthur Firstenberg, who authored the book, “Microwaving Our Planet: The Environmental Impact of the Wireless Revolution” in 1997, explains that the short electromagnetic pulses from 5G enter the body and then the charges become tiny antennas that re-radiate the electromagnetic field, sending it deeper into the body. These re-radiated waves are called Brillouin precursors, and they become a problem when the power or phase of the waves change quickly, which they do with 5G technology.
A comprehensive article in Scientific American outlines these 5G health effects and the need for independent research. In addition to cancer, they also mention evidence of neurological and reproductive disorders due to oxidative stress.
What You Can Do About 5G
Are you concerned about the effects of 5G on health? While this technology is already all around us, you are not powerless! From Oklahoma to California, residents are joining together to demand more information and studies that examine health risks. These are steps you can take now:
- Voice your concerns about 5G in your community to your local officials.
- Inform others about the health risks of 5G and the many unknowns of this new technology.
- Protect yourself from 5G by neutralizing its effects in your home, vehicle and office.
What Can I Do to Minimize My Risk of 5G Health Effects?
The American Cancer Society lists ways to reduce your RF radiation exposure.
- Avoid jobs that increase your RF exposure.
- Limit your time around equipment, appliances and devices that emit RF radiation (like Wi-Fi routers).
- Limit the time you spend with your cell phone held up to your ear, and don’t keep it stored next to your body.
However, even they admit that these methods may not be helpful in minimizing health risks. And 5G health effects on humans is not even discussed.
